PERSONALITY: She is first and foremost an exuberant, energetic and easy-going girl. Combined with her love of learning about things it has cultivated in her an immense drive for reading books and a desire to discuss these books and their information with anyone she can. Her passion is not limited to one subject, but she is most often heard discussing youkai or the rare books that her family’s store acquires, since this is what she is immersed in on a daily basis.
Overall her manner is helpful and polite, something reinforced both by the values of her family and Kosuzu’s time working in the shop. Her knowledge and exuberance lends to her being quick witted and occasionally a bit of a smart ass. This side of her is most obvious when she’s around Reimu, as they’ve been friends the longest so she feels the most comfortable being informal. She tries to be respectful when speaking to adults, using prefixes when she knows the appropriate ones and avoiding slang.
Kosuzu’s energy also leads to her being quick to react to problems or events, at the sacrifice of not thinking her actions all the way through. This sometimes leads to complications that Reimu (or others) will have to come and correct. In Forbidden Scrollery we see this happen when she unintentionally sets loose a smoke youkai that she had originally used to banish a word-eating youkai from the shop. In the end it is Reimu that finds the youkai out and manages to return it to the book from whence it was summoned. Yet when Reimu hints at this flaw and the issues it could bring about, the girl’s response is to smile, act as if it’s not a big deal and say that she knows she can always turn to Reimu when an incident arises.
It is her easy-going nature and her desire to use the information she has gained (or simply her ability) to ignore or cover up her own flaws. If she makes a mistake or realizes she has caused trouble (especially for Reimu) she’ll do her best to deny that she had any involvement with it and then secretly do what she can to find the solution while nobody is looking. Once the incident has been ended Kosuzu immediately reverts to her previous mentality and actions. There’s a good chance this cycle will continue unless something she does renders grave consequences that specifically affect her or her friends.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Touch Acquired Omnilingualism- Kosuzu can read, speak, and understand any language so long as she has physical contact with a person who can speak it or an object with writing in that language.
If contact is broken, her ability can last 15 minutes max before it no longer functions. This is under perfect conditions in which there are no distractions and she isn’t under any stress. In worse conditions she might only get 5 or 7 minutes before the language knowledge disappears. Currently she prefers to use books as her reference contact. The main reason for this is that she can acquire full command of the language in question no matter what level it’s written in. For example, she could be touching a children’s book written in Portuguese and be able to have a complex discussion with an adult in Portuguese. When in contact with a person, her proficiency becomes tied to that of the person serving as her reference. If they only have an elementary level understanding of the language, that is all she can use.
AU HISTORY: Hailing from the area in Nagano prefecture as her closest friend Reimu Hakurei, Kosuzu was born into a small family that has a love of mixing traditional Japanese culture with modern and Western accents. They have owned a shop called Suzunaan that lends and sells books for generations that is the most clear representation of this- while the building and its style of decoration are in classic Japanese style, it’s a clean, well lit establishment with a state of the art system for tracking its collection of works. These books range from some of the oldest and rarest books in Japan to the current best-sellers. They have also been known to manage some small scale printing for local writers.
She grew up listening to stories of youkai and how they influenced the human world as told by her grandparents as well as Reimu. It was her fascination with these non-human forces that led her to befriend the successor to the shrine, even though she herself wasn’t very religious. This relationship led to her meeting Marisa, whom she also regards as a friend but not on the same level as Reimu. In general, Kosuzu’s life was quite calm and uneventful, especially after the departure of two of her closest friends to America. She still went to school and helped her parents with the shop duties. Everything simply became quiet.
The summer before her first year of high school Kosuzu took over a great deal of the daily operations of the shop, and it was while she was cleaning a shelf full of books written in classical Japanese that she found the first hints of her mutant ability. She had knocked a collection of waka poetry down, the book had landed open, and when she went to pick it up suddenly the words on the page were understandable instead of undecipherable scrawling.
After this discovery she began reading all the “unreadable” books in the shop, careful to only do so when no customers were present. Yet as more time passed without her getting caught she began to make little slip ups, like forgetting to take her hand off the book she was reading and using an older form of Japanese with a client and once writing a part of her homework in French. With concerns about the current political mentality towards mutants in Japan and fear that without proper instruction Kosuzu might make a mistake that leads to her being found out, it was decided to send the girl to the same school that two of her friends already attended.

“How does it feel to be traveling away from home?”
It was an innocent question one of her classmates had asked after it was announced that she would be going abroad for school. At the time she had brushed the entire thing off, like it was just going to be the same as a trip to Kyoto for the weekend. They had made it sound so trivial, after all, as if she should only have a one word answer like ‘happy’ or ‘anxious’.
If by some slip of character she had decided to answer truthfully, what would she have said? The thought of seeing Reimu and Marisa again is definitely a happy one. There would be new libraries to explore and people to practice the speaking side of her ability with. Those possibilities held positive feelings as well. But there is this small part of her that worries. Perhaps it was cultivated by being around Reimu so much, she’s not completely certain. But some facts were clear to her. She was about to be thrown in a completely unfamiliar environment with very few people she could call her allies. This was happening, and her ability was absolutely useless should a conflict arise.
Kosuzu sighs, slouching in the chair behind the desk of Suzunaan. No matter what, she was going to America. It was the right decision, the outcome she had been hoping for for quite some time, so it wouldn’t do any good to stress over what might or might not happen. All’s well that ends well, right? If this led to her getting a better handle on the whole universal translator thing, she was up for it.
